Masked Protesters Mistake Pakistan U19 Cricket Team for Migrants

A group of masked protesters gathered outside a hotel in Portsmouth, mistakenly believing that asylum seekers had been accommodated there, when in fact it was the Pakistan Under-19 cricket team. The incident took place outside the four-star Marriott hotel and has been described as a "massively unfortunate incident" by George Madgwick, a local councillor from the Reform party. Madgwick was called to mediate after reports surfaced that around 40 individuals deemed 'foreign' were seen entering the hotel. He confirmed that the hotel was, in reality, hosting young cricketers from Pakistan, who are on a tour of the UK.

Madgwick explained that the confusion arose due to recent media coverage about asylum seekers arriving in Portsmouth via small boats. The protests intensified following a similar demonstration at the port of Dover, where individuals in balaclavas blocked roads. Daniel Thomas, a far-right activist linked to controversial figure Tommy Robinson, was reported to have organised both protests.

On the evening of the incident, police were called to manage the crowd of masked individuals clashing with law enforcement. This situation has led to an investigation into possible assaults and acts of criminal damage. As the incidents unfolded, Madgwick attempted to clear the misunderstanding, addressing the protesters directly by stating, "You’ve got it wrong, guys, it’s a cricket club."

Reassured by Madgwick, the protesters dispersed after learning that the individuals they suspected were migrants were, in fact, athletes. He highlighted the broader context in which such misunderstandings occur, acknowledging that heightened tensions regarding immigration issues have left local residents on edge.

This incident has prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to contact the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the young cricketers. The ECB is also reviewing security measures for the Pakistan team's ongoing tour in the UK. The U19 team has recently played against the England U19s in a four-day Test, losing narrowly by 10 runs. They are scheduled to compete once more against England close to Arundel before concluding their tour at Guildford.

The senior Pakistan men's team is currently in the UK, engaged in a Test series against England at Edgbaston. The recent events underscore the complexities surrounding current societal sentiments and the potential for misinterpretation in tense environments.
