Manoj Bajpayee Portrays Mahatma Gandhi in New Film by Sudhir Mishra
Renowned Indian actor Manoj Bajpayee is set to portray Mahatma Gandhi for the first time in a new film directed by Sudhir Mishra. The project, which is currently in production, began filming in Lucknow on Friday. It is backed by Anubhav Sinha, a prominent filmmaker known for his work across various socially-relevant narratives.
The film, tentatively titled 'Gandhi and My Mother', focuses on a specific chapter in Gandhi's later life. Sudhir Mishra has expressed a personal connection to the project, revealing that his late mother, Durga Devendra Nath Mishra, met Gandhi as a child. In discussions before her passing in 2022, she inspired him to create this film based on her experiences with Gandhi. Mishra stated, "I made a promise to her that I will make a film on him."
Shooting commenced in the Narhi locality near the Lucknow Zoo, featuring an outdoor sequence aimed at authentically depicting public movements led by Gandhi. The production team has created an immersive setting reminiscent of the 1940s, complete with vintage cars, period costumes, and historical signboards that contribute to the film's authenticity.
Anubhav Sinha, who is collaborating with Mishra for the second time following their joint project 'Afwaah' in 2023, noted that Bajpayee has undergone a significant transformation for the role. Sinha commented, "Manoj has lost considerable weight for the film and is currently in the ‘Gandhi zone’ on a restricted diet and a particular lifestyle."
The film’s production is expected to last until October and will explore a 21-day chapter in Gandhi’s life. Sinha hinted that a new title will be unveiled as production progresses.
Mishra's filmmaking resume includes multiple projects set in his hometown of Lucknow, such as 'Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin' and 'Daas Dev'. Similarly, Sinha has directed several films in the same city, including notable titles like 'Mulk' and 'Article 15'.
As the film nears completion, both filmmakers are eager to share a narrative that resonates deeply with viewers, shedding new light on a pivotal figure in India’s history.
