Mamata Banerjee Criticises Election Chief Over Poll Irregularities
Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assails India's Chief Election Commissioner over alleged electoral manipulations ahead of upcoming elections.

Former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has strongly condemned Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, asserting that the current political climate does not necessitate waiting until the 2029 Lok Sabha elections for change. Banerjee's remarks came during a press conference on Thursday, where she accused Kumar of undermining the democratic process in India.

Referring to the Chief Election Commissioner as 'Vanish Kumar', Banerjee claimed that he has effectively stripped citizens of their voting rights. Abhishek Banerjee, her senior colleague and Member of Parliament, echoed her sentiments, alleging that recent deletions from electoral rolls benefited the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by granting them an unfair advantage in approximately 150 seats during the last Assembly elections.

At the press briefing, Mamata Banerjee expressed concern regarding the alleged centralisation of the electoral process, arguing that it has hindered transparency. She specifically called attention to an incident in June where a fire destroyed around 4,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) in South Kolkata, suggesting that the BJP orchestrated the event to manipulate future elections.

Citing her party's opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, she criticized what she describes as a disproportionate impact on constituencies dominated by her party, the Trinamool Congress. "Khela shuru (The game has started)," she stated emphatically. Banerjee asserted that the Chief Election Commissioner should be removed from his position, predicting a significant shift in the political landscape in the near future.

While she refrained from providing a specific timeline for political change, she expressed optimism that favourable developments would occur soon. "I think, very soon, you will get the good news," she indicated.

Mamata Banerjee further dismissed concerns regarding unity among opposition parties, including members of the I.N.D.I.A. bloc such as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Despite minor challenges, she stated that the opposition remains united and determined to oust the BJP from power.

In addressing the political climate in West Bengal since the BJP assumed control, she reported escalating intimidation tactics against her party members, citing over 14,000 legal cases filed against them. She lamented that her movement is restricted and alleged that BJP supporters regularly disrupt her daily life.

As she concluded her statements, Banerjee affirmed the importance of protecting democratic rights and vowed to rally her followers to ensure that justice prevails in the electoral process. The growing scrutiny surrounding the Chief Election Commission and its decisions continues to raise questions regarding the integrity of India's electoral system.
