Maharashtra Opposition Protests Against Chief Election Commissioner
Opposition parties in Maharashtra organised a large protest on Sunday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging extensive manipulation of electoral rolls designed to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in elections. Thousands of participants took part in the "Garjana" march, moving from Metro Cinema to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters in Mumbai. Protesters voiced concerns over what they perceive as an infringement on voters' rights.
Leaders from various opposition parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress, participated in the march. They accused the Election Commission of India of undermining the democratic process, contending that the BJP was hijacking the electoral system for its own advantage. Uddhav Thackeray, chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), highlighted that the struggle was not against any specific individual or group, but rather against the perceived tyranny of those in power.
"We are fighting to restore genuine freedom to India, which has been suppressed by the BJP's control over the Election Commission and other independent institutions that are no longer impartial," Uddhav Thackeray stated. He estimated that approximately 130 million voters had seen their rights curtailed through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, allegedly aimed at ensuring electoral success for the BJP in Maharashtra and West Bengal despite notable public dissatisfaction with the ruling government.
The march also saw Raj Thackeray, leader of MNS, express his concerns regarding the manipulation of votes. He remarked, "People are beginning to understand that their votes are being manipulated. In a democracy, it is a right for the electorate to choose their government, but currently, it appears the Election Commission is determining the outcome of elections."
Raj Thackeray pointed out that there was a significant increase in the number of registered voters in Maharashtra ahead of the 2024 state assembly election, which he attributed to manipulation by those in power. He demanded the cancellation of the SIR exercise and the return to traditional ballot paper voting.
Congress party leader Balasaheb Thorat added that Rahul Gandhi had previously raised allegations of electoral fraud and had provided supporting evidence. He heavily criticised the changes to the appointment process for Election Commission members, particularly the removal of the Supreme Court judge from the selection panel, labelling Gyanesh Kumar as representative of a corrupt administration.
Throughout the march, political party flags were prohibited, with participants instructed to display only the national tricolour. The event also attracted support from Abhijeet Dipke, leader of the Cockroach Janta Party, who urged attendees to view the current climate as critical for change.
The protest aims to bring to light growing apprehensions among opposition factions about the integrity of electoral processes in India, as tensions rise ahead of upcoming elections.
