Maharashtra FDA Chief Emphasises Public Health Over Popularity

Tukaram Mundhe, the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maharashtra, has recently gained public attention due to his aggressive approach aimed at improving food safety in the state. He stressed that his focus is on public health rather than personal recognition. "Popularity was never my goal," Mundhe stated in an interview with Press Trust of India.

Since taking office in May, he has overseen significant actions against food safety violations, resulting in either the suspension or closure of 12,083 entities. This includes a mixture of restaurants, eateries, and pharmacies. Mundhe explained that hygiene standards, manufacturing practices, raw material quality, and inadequate training were the most commonly observed violations.

In his commitment to elevating public health standards, the FDA has conducted 1,803 inspections of hotels and restaurants, issuing improvement notices in 948 cases and suspending licenses in 199 instances. He also pointed out that food delivery platforms are classified as food business operators under the law. Despite this classification, he indicated that they often do not assume the necessary responsibilities, leading to regulatory actions against them.

Mundhe addressed the scrutiny faced from political circles due to his stringent measures, asserting, "It is not aggressive. I am doing what I am supposed to do diligently." He reiterated that raising public health issues to the forefront is crucial for progress, stating, "India cannot become a superpower without a healthy human resource."

The FDA's actions have not only targeted restaurants but also pharmacies, with 740 licenses cancelled or suspended in recent months for various infractions. Additionally, the FDA has issued notices to several well-known Bollywood actors regarding advertisements that may not comply with health regulations. Notably, actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff are among those who have received notices but still have time to respond.

In response to criticism from the Bombay High Court regarding the administration's handling of the Cipla case, Mundhe defended the FDA's actions. He clarified that the cancellation of Cipla Pharma's drug sale licenses was due to serious irregularities in storage and handling. Mundhe noted that while there was an error in notice procedure, it was not considered a significant procedural mistake.

Mundhe expressed his concern about the prevalence of substandard and counterfeit medicines in Maharashtra, stressing the need for a thorough examination of manufacturing processes. He has directed his officers to focus on process auditing and to ensure good distribution practices are adhered to throughout the pharmaceutical supply chain.
