Maharashtra Chief Minister Defends Electoral Roll Revisions amid Protests
Devendra Fadnavis supports the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, asserting its importance for accurate voting amidst opposition protests.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls during a recent event on Sunday. His remarks come amid increasing protests from the opposition against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the ongoing revisions.

Fadnavis highlighted the significance of the SIR process, stating that it aims to eliminate bogus voting and to uphold the voting rights of legitimate citizens. He stressed, "This is the true strength of the SIR process. With SIR, the election system will become more efficient, and the foundation of democracy will be further strengthened."

The Chief Minister, who is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), emphasised the need for an accurate and current voter list. He remarked, "To strengthen the principle of ‘One Citizen, One Vote,’ an accurate and up-to-date voter list is extremely important. Through the SIR, an effort is being made to review the entries in the voter list and bring greater accuracy and reliability to the election process."

Fadnavis elaborated on the objectives of the SIR, noting it would assist in updating records of deceased individuals, as well as identifying and removing duplicates from the electoral rolls. He stated, “Keeping the entries in the voter list regularly updated is an important aspect for an accurate election system. This process is useful to ensure that eligible voters’ names remain and ineligible entries are removed. Having an accurate record of actual voters in the constituency is necessary for an efficient election system.”

Moreover, the Chief Minister pointed out that the SIR allows voters to verify their details, make required corrections, and submit updated information, contributing to the overall integrity of the electoral process. This initiative is part of a wider effort to enhance the transparency and accuracy of elections in the state of Maharashtra, amid concerns from various political factions about the integrity of the electoral rolls.
