Magnitude 7.6 Earthquake Off Panama's Coast Triggers Tsunami Alert
A significant earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale occurred off the southern coast of Panama on Monday, leading to immediate tsunami warnings for the surrounding coastal areas. The seismic event, which struck at approximately 11:00 local time, has raised concerns among residents and authorities alike.
As per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicentre was located 55 miles southwest of the city of David, one of the region's larger urban centres. The depth of the quake was recorded at around 10 kilometres, which is relatively shallow and often leads to increased surface shaking.
In response to the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued alerts advising coastal communities to prepare for possible tsunami waves. Tsunami warnings typically alert residents to evacuate low-lying areas that could be affected by rising ocean levels.
Local officials have urged the public to remain cautious while they assess any potential damage. In a statement made shortly after the event, the National Civil Protection System of Panama announced that emergency teams were mobilising to monitor the situation and support affected areas.
As of now, there are no confirmed reports of injuries or significant structural damages, though this situation may change as assessments continue. Authorities are urging residents to remain alert and follow safety protocols until the situation is fully evaluated.
Historically, Panama lies in a tectonically active region, making it susceptible to seismic activities. Emergency preparedness is vital in these situations, and numerous safety protocols have been put in place in recent years to better equip communities for responses.
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available regarding the earthquake's effects and the ongoing safety measures being implemented in the region.
