Actress Madhoo praises Rashmika Mandanna for confidently owning her South Indian accent despite criticism, highlighting personal journey of acceptance.

Actress Madhoo has publicly praised fellow actress Rashmika Mandanna for her confidence in embracing her South Indian accent. This reaction follows Mandanna's recent comments during an episode of the popular talk show 'Koffee with Karan'. In a video shared online, Madhoo commended Mandanna for her attitude towards the criticism she receives regarding her accent.

Madhoo stated, “I recently saw Rashmika Mandanna’s show 'Koffee with Karan', and the way she dealt with her accent criticism, I just loved it. She laughs about it, she accepts it, she owns it.” She highlighted how the younger actress proudly identifies as a South Indian and embraces her accent, stating, “So, I am a South Indian and I have a South Indian accent.”

Recalling her own journey as an actress in Hindi cinema, Madhoo reflected on the challenges she faced early in her career regarding her own accent. “Many, many years ago, when I became a Hindi film actor, I was so afraid of the judgements I was getting,” she explained. She shared that it took her three decades to fully accept her background, remarking, “Today, I am so proud to say that I am a South Indian.”

In her supportive message to Mandanna, Madhoo added, “Great power to you, girl! I just loved that you own it, laugh about it, and you are truly a star.” The actress encapsulated her sentiments with a message, stating, “I am proud to be a South Indian with the South Indian accent and it took me 30 years to get here but Rashmika you’re already there.”

Madhoo’s comments come in response to the online scrutiny that Rashmika Mandanna has faced regarding her Hindi pronunciation, which has been a topic of discussion since she debuted in Hindi films. Lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar also defended Mandanna, urging critics to appreciate the diversity of languages in India. He remarked on social media, “Those who have any problem with the pronunciation of Tamil actor Rashmika should be given a few lines of Tamil and let’s see how well they pronounce it. This fake and baseless linguistic superiority is not acceptable.”

Rashmika Mandanna, addressing the criticism she has dealt with throughout her career, asserted her intention to not let such remarks limit her aspirations. She stated, “I didn't want to just work in one industry. I wanted to work in them all.” Mandanna expressed her pride in her cultural identity, saying, “I particularly didn’t have an issue with that because they said I had a South Indian accent, but I am from the South of India.” This perspective highlights the ongoing conversation about identity, regional accents, and acceptance within India's diverse film industry.
