Lynching of Hindu Man Escalates Unrest in Bangladesh
A Hindu youth was killed by a mob in Bangladesh, igniting fears over minority safety as unrest continues in the country amid political tensions.

A Hindu man was brutally murdered by a mob in Bangladesh's Mymensingh district on Thursday night, following accusations of blasphemy, according to reports from BBC Bangla. The incident, which has heightened concerns regarding the safety of minorities in the country, occurred in the Dubalia Para area of Square Master Bari in Bhaluka upazila.

The victim has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a local garment factory worker and resident of the area. Ripon Mia, the duty officer at Bhaluka police station, stated, "A group of agitated people caught him and beat him up around 9 pm on Thursday for insulting the Prophet. Then they set his body on fire." Mia further revealed that the attackers tied Das's body to a tree before igniting it.

Authorities responded to the scene after being alerted and managed to bring the situation under control. Das's body was subsequently retrieved and sent to the morgue at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident. Mia mentioned, "We are searching for his relatives. If they come and file a case, action will be taken according to the law."

The interim government of Bangladesh condemned the lynching through a statement posted on X, marking their first official response to the ongoing unrest. The statement declared, "We wholeheartedly condemn the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh. There is no space for such violence in new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared."

This violent act comes against the backdrop of escalating unrest across Bangladesh, particularly following the recent death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent student leader who was fatally shot by masked gunmen earlier this month. Hadi's death sparked widespread protests in Dhaka, further destabilising the already tense situation in the country.

In the capital city, several buildings, including those housing notable newspapers such as Prothom Alo and the Daily Star, were vandalised and set ablaze. Journalists reported being trapped in smoke-filled newsrooms as firefighters conducted rescue operations. Zyma Islam, a reporter for the Daily Star, shared her distressing experience on Facebook, stating, "I can't breathe anymore. There's too much smoke. I am inside. You are killing me."

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze at the Daily Star building around 1:40 am, rescuing 27 employees. Kamal Ahmed, a consulting editor for the publication, noted, "For the first time in the newspaper's history, the publication had to be halted." Sajjad Sharif, executive editor of Prothom Alo, described the attacks as an assault on press freedom and the diversity of opinion in the country.

The violence has also attracted international attention, with the Committee to Protect Journalists expressing alarm and urging Bangladeshi authorities to safeguard journalists and ensure accountability for those responsible for the violence.

In New Delhi, a parliamentary standing committee on external affairs acknowledged the complex and evolving situation in Bangladesh. The committee highlighted ongoing attacks on minorities and media groups, stating, "The political events of August 2024 have created significant instability and uncertainty, with incidents of violence, attacks, and intimidation of minorities, tribal communities, media groups, intellectuals, journalists, and academicians becoming the norm."

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs conveyed its concerns regarding extremism and the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, while continuing to engage with the interim government to maintain bilateral relations despite recent political upheavals.

Authorities in Bangladesh have initiated a manhunt for Hadi's assailants and have announced a reward for information leading to their apprehension, as they grapple with unrest that raises significant questions about law enforcement and the protection of minority groups in the nation.
