King Haakon VIII of Norway has delivered his inaugural speech as the new monarch, expressing profound respect and sorrow for his late father, Harald V. The address, broadcasted nationally, took place at the royal palace and was accompanied by poignant symbols of remembrance, including a photograph of Harald, two lit candles, and a vase of white roses.

Harald V, who passed away at the age of 89 due to a rare blood condition, was remembered by his son as a cherished parent, grandparent, and husband. "Thank you for being such a good dad," said King Haakon, who acknowledged the weight of his new responsibilities.

The new king highlighted the ideals of national cohesion in his speech, affirming the royal family's belief in a just society where all individuals hold equal worth. He described Harald’s legacy as one of warm familial connections, recalling his father’s role as a loving parent to both himself and his sister, Princess Märtha Louise, and as a doting grandfather to his six grandchildren.

Haakon expressed heartfelt emotions as he recounted that the day following the speech would have marked the couple's 58th wedding anniversary, underscoring the depth of the family’s loss.

In the wake of Harald V's passing, a national period of mourning has been announced, although no funeral date has yet been set. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre was among the many who paid their respects outside the palace, acknowledging that the nation is united in both grief and gratitude for the late king's service.

King Haakon is set to take a formal oath of allegiance in parliament on Tuesday, followed by a consecration service alongside his wife, Queen Mette-Marit. This event will serve as a more simplified version of a coronation, as Norway no longer holds traditional coronation ceremonies.

Haakon assumes the throne at a tumultuous time for the royal family, having faced health challenges and public scrutiny throughout the year. Queen Mette-Marit underwent a lung transplant after suffering from pulmonary fibrosis since 2018; her condition remains a consideration as she continues her recovery. Additionally, her son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Høiby, has recently been convicted of serious offences and is currently appealing his sentence.

Controversies within the family have also surrounded Princess Märtha Louise, who made headlines for her marriage to an American self-styled shaman, prompting her to step back from royal duties. While addressing these challenges, King Haakon conveyed his commitment to family unity, stating, "Our family has experienced the importance of standing together in order to remain steadfast... even during difficult times."

He expressed determination to understand the diverse experiences of all Norwegians, vowing to stand with his compatriots through both trials and triumphs. Despite recent dips in public support for the monarchy, where a poll indicated approval had fallen from 72% in 2024 to 54%, observers have conveyed confidence in King Haakon's dedication and capability to lead effectively amid these challenges.
