King Clarifies Status of Prince Harry and Meghan as Non-Royals

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will not hold royal duties upon their recent return to the United Kingdom. This was made clear in a letter sent on behalf of King Charles III, which outlines their status as non-working royals.

The couple returned to the UK from their home in California with their children, Archie and Lilibet, last month. They are no longer permitted to use the titles "His and Her Royal Highness" and are referred to as private citizens in the letter from the Lord Chamberlain, a senior official in the Palace.

The letter has been disseminated to Prince Harry's team as well as relevant governmental departments and military officials, clarifying that any future engagements they undertake will be in a private capacity and not representative of the Royal Family. This aims to avoid any potential confusion about royal representation.

Photographs on social media have suggested that Prince Harry has been seen for the first time since his return, appearing at a studio in London. The letter emphasizes the ongoing implications of the Sandringham Agreement, established in January 2020, when the Sussexes stepped back from their royal duties. This arrangement ruled out any status that would allow them to undertake commercial activities while acting as working royals.

According to the letter, "It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign, and are no longer working members of the Royal Family." The letter was intended to reiterate that the Sussexes' charitable activities remain personal matters.

The King's letter also addresses potential inquiries from organisations about how they should treat the Sussexes during any public interactions, particularly regarding funding matters. In addition, Prince Harry and Meghan's return follows a notably tumultuous departure from the UK, which they have documented in their Netflix series.

Since relocating, they have established financial independence, with Prince Harry authoring a successful memoir and Meghan launching an online food collection. Over the summer, they made an unexpected return to the UK, where their children are expected to attend school.
