KIMS Secunderabad Achieves Milestone of Over 10,000 Brain Tumour Surgeries
KIMS Hospitals, located in Secunderabad, has marked a significant milestone by successfully completing over 10,000 brain tumour surgeries. This achievement was announced on World Brain Tumour Day, reinforcing the hospital's commitment to advancing healthcare.
Dr Bhaskar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Group of Hospitals, highlighted how rapidly advancing medical technology is making intricate surgical procedures more manageable and enhancing recovery times for patients. 'The newly launched Robotic Digital Microscope will be a game-changer in treating intricate brain and spinal cord disorders,' he stated during the unveiling of the new equipment.
Dr Manas Kumar Panigrahi, a Senior Neurosurgeon at the hospital, addressed the public's tendency to overlook recurring headaches. 'A persistent headache, particularly one that is severe upon waking, should never be ignored, as it may indicate the presence of a brain tumour,' he warned. Dr Panigrahi further elaborated that almost 10% of the procedures performed at KIMS were on children, dispelling the myth that brain tumours predominantly affect older adults.
The newly introduced Robotic Digital Microscope is designed to provide enhanced clarity during surgeries, allowing surgeons to effectively distinguish between healthy brain tissue and tumours, thereby minimising collateral damage to surrounding areas. Dr Panigrahi called for reforms in preventive healthcare, emphasising the importance of including brain screenings in standard health packages, which often currently focus on cardiac health.
Alongside Dr Panigrahi, Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Shwetha outlined various symptoms associated with brain tumours, varying depending on tumour size and location, which can include headaches, nausea, blurred vision, and seizures. She noted, 'Brain tumours are increasingly prevalent among children and young adults, making it imperative for individuals to lead healthier lifestyles and seek timely medical advice when experiencing troubling symptoms.'
The event attracted a number of neuro-experts and recovered patients and included activities such as a painting competition designed for children. This milestone serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive health measures and the continuous advancements in medical technology that improve diagnostic and treatment capabilities for patients suffering from brain conditions.
