In a surprising development, senior cricketer Karun Nair, who departed from the South Zone team during the Duleep Trophy final due to unspecified personal reasons, re-emerged the following day to play for the KSCA Secretary XI in a local tournament. Just 24 hours after leaving the squad, Nair scored a century, amassing 104 runs from 184 balls in the Dr (Capt) K Thimmappaiah Memorial Tournament, held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Nair's swift return to competitive cricket has raised questions among fans and commentators regarding the nature of his earlier departure from the Duleep Trophy. The 34-year-old batter had been omitted from the South Zone XI that faced North Zone in the semifinal and subsequently from the final against East Zone, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

After leaving the Duleep Trophy match on its first day, he not only returned home but quickly made an appearance in a local red-ball tournament, leading to speculation about the validity of his stated personal reasons for withdrawal. The head coach of South Zone, MN Vikram Verma, confirmed that Nair had requested leave for family matters. 'He emailed us to seek permission because of personal family reasons,' Verma stated. His comments come amidst East Zone's impressive performance, having set a daunting target of 708 runs against South Zone.

In detailing the roster decisions, Verma noted that Nair’s absence in the previous matches was strategic due to team composition requirements. 'We decided to go with a good combination for the team, considering the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition,' he explained. The squad had welcomed Devdutt Padikkal back, which necessitated further changes to the batting lineup.

Karun Nair has had a noteworthy career, having played 129 first-class matches and famously scoring a triple century while representing India against England in 2016.
