Karnataka Minister Claims Quran's Message is Universal

KOPPAL: Basavaraj Rayareddy, the Higher Education Minister of Karnataka, recently expressed his views on Islam during a mass marriage ceremony for the Muslim community, held to commemorate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. Rayareddy asserted that Islam holds a superior position among religions and emphasised the universal nature of the Quran. "Islam is a great religion. Many misconceptions are being created about Islam. I am ready to study the Quran," he stated. He also mentioned a personal aspiration to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage, underscoring that he has yet to have the opportunity.

His remarks included the assertion that the Quran was intended for all humanity rather than just Muslims. He stated, "The Quran was not given only to Muslims. Anyone can read the Quran. Prophet Muhammad gave the Quran to the entire universe." Rayareddy described the principles of Islam as scientific and beneficial in guiding human conduct.

He further advised against religious fanaticism and stressed the importance of appreciating the positive aspects present in all faiths. "Similar practices are followed in temples as well," he said, calling for people to engage meaningfully with their faiths rather than merely performing rituals. He highlighted that simply attending a mosque and expressing devotion is insufficient for true adherence.

In addressing community support, Rayareddy mentioned that the government has allocated funds for wedding halls, known as Shadi Mahals, emphasising that these funds do not come from outside sources like Saudi Arabia or Pakistan. He warned against the desecration of religious property, stating, "Touching or taking away the offerings or land belonging to a religious institution is a great sin."

Other notable figures present at the event included Urban Development Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah and MP K Rajashekar Hitnal. The collective effort aims to foster unity and understanding among different communities within Karnataka.
