Karnataka IAS Officer Gyanendra Kumar Clarifies Disappearance
Karnataka IAS officer Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar, initially reported missing, has confirmed he travelled home due to a family emergency.

Bengaluru: Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar, an Indian Administrative Service officer from Karnataka, was reported missing after taking a flight from Bengaluru to Delhi on August 20. His unavailability sparked considerable speculation, especially concerning allegations of irregularities at the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC).

Karnataka's Home Minister, Priyank Kharge, acknowledged the situation, stating that Gangwar had been out of contact since his arrival in Delhi, which led to concerns about his welfare. The officer, who is part of the 2016 IAS batch, has held significant roles, including serving as the Controller of Examination for the KPSC until March 2026. In June, he was appointed Director of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) within the Department of Industries and Commerce.

As reported, Gangwar booked a last-minute flight ticket to Delhi for ₹30,200 (approximately £310) and arrived around 6 PM. He then hired a taxi but subsequently became unreachable. Despite the unsettling circumstances, no formal complaint regarding his absence was made by his family or friends, a police spokesperson confirmed.

Minister Kharge later informed that the officer reached out to the state government, explaining that he had sought emergency leave to return to his hometown due to a personal matter. "During this period, he was not reachable on his official phone, which appears to have led to some confusion and speculation about his whereabouts," Kharge noted on social media.

The incident unfolded against a backdrop of controversy surrounding the KPSC, which has been implicated in a recent paper leak scandal related to veterinary services examinations. The Enforcement Directorate has also been conducting investigations into the commission, adding scrutiny to its operations. While some reports hinted that Gangwar's absence might relate to these developments, officials have not confirmed such links, nor has any evidence been presented.

Kharge stated that the confusion regarding the officer's situation was exacerbated by his temporary loss of communication. He assured that the situation has since been clarified and that the government is monitoring the issue. The Karnataka Cabinet had also convened prior to these events, contemplating suspension and inquiry proceedings against KPSC chairperson Shivashankarappa S Sahukar, exacerbating the sense of urgency around matters involving the commission.

The state continues to focus on maintaining clarity and transparency regarding the ongoing developments linked to the KPSC, while also addressing public concerns regarding the officer’s well-being.
