Kamran Akmal Criticises Saim Ayub Over Sooryavanshi Send-Off
In a recent discussion surrounding the Asian Games men's cricket final, concerns were raised regarding the behaviour of Pakistani cricketer Saim Ayub towards Indian player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The match, held between India and Pakistan, saw India emerge victorious by 19 runs, defending their title. However, it was the manner in which Ayub dismissed Sooryavanshi that has caused a stir. The incident occurred when Sooryavanshi, aged 15, was batting fearlessly and poised to make a significant impact. His innings came to an abrupt end when he attempted a reverse sweep off Saim Ayub but was successfully caught out for 15 runs off 9 balls. Following this dismissal, Ayub made a gesture often described as a ‘baby cradle’ aimed at mocking the younger player. This celebration did not sit well with many in the cricketing community, prompting commentary from former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal. During an appearance on the 'Game Plan' YouTube show, Akmal remarked on the unfortunate nature of Ayub's actions. He stated, 'These things have been happening for a long time. Our performance hasn't been great, but we are doing things for social media. The management should think about this. It's international cricket. No matter whether he is 13, 14 or 15, he's playing international cricket. Saim Ayub is not a kid. He should focus on his performances.' The comments reflect a broader sentiment of professionalism expected in sports, particularly at an international level. During the match, India set a formidable target of 211 runs, with notable performances from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 61 runs, and Tilak Varma, who remained not out at 51. In response, Pakistan's Hasan Nawaz made a valiant effort, scoring 96 runs but ultimately fell short. The dynamics of rivalry in cricket are often intensified by such moments, making the need for sportsmanship crucial. As the Asian Games continue to showcase emerging talent, interactions between players will be scrutinised by fans and analysts alike, raising discussions about etiquette and respect in the sport.
