Kagan and Soai Win 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Mirror Image Breakthrough
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to French scientist Henri Kagan and Japanese scientist Kenso Soai for their pioneering work on asymmetric 'mirror image' molecules. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the honour, highlighting the significance of their breakthroughs in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Kagan, aged 95, and Soai, aged 76, were recognised for their discovery of nonlinear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis. This work elucidates how chemical reactions can be controlled to favour one mirror image of a molecule over another, a crucial aspect for synthesising drugs that are often chiral, meaning they have a left and a right form, like a pair of gloves.
The phenomenon, known as 'homochirality', refers to the preference of living organisms for one specific mirror image of a molecule, a mystery that has confounded chemists for more than a century. Peter Somfai, a member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, emphasised the importance of the laureates' findings, stating, "The left-handed version of the drug can have one effect, and the right-handed version can have another effect, and then we need methods for selectively preparing them."
Somfai credited Kagan and Soai with providing essential tools for chemists seeking to design selective reactions in drug manufacturing. Heiner Linke, the committee chair, referred to their contribution as a solution to a long-standing chemical mystery, calling the reactions they developed 'spectacular'.
Upon receiving the news, Soai expressed his joy during a phone call to the Nobel Prize news conference. "This is the most exciting day in my life; I am very glad to share this prize with Professor Henri Kagan," he stated while recalling that he was out shopping at the time of the announcement.
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is the third award to be announced during Nobel week, following those in medicine and physics. The Nobel Prize in Literature is scheduled to be announced shortly, with the Peace Prize following.
The Nobel Prizes, established by the will of industrialist Alfred Nobel, have been awarded since 1901, celebrating achievements in science, literature, and peace. Although Nobel made significant wealth through his inventions, particularly in explosives, the prizes aim to honour contributions that benefit humanity.
