Jharkhand Widow's Barefoot Sprint for Home Guard Role Gains Attention
A video featuring a widowed mother sprinting barefoot over a 1,600-metre distance during a practice session has captured the hearts of many. The incident took place at a recruitment drive for home guards in Ramgarg district, Jharkhand, where Kavita Mahto completed the run significantly faster than the required time of ten minutes.
Ajay Karmali, director of the HMT Physical Academy in Dulmi, reported that Mahto finished the race in just seven minutes. The trials were held on October 4, ahead of an official recruitment period commencing from October 24 and running until November 5, which aims to select 284 home guards.
Karmali emphasised the challenges faced by Mahto, stating she lost her husband to illness three years ago. Since then, her circumstances worsened when her brother-in-law, the family’s main provider, died in a road accident six months ago. Mahto is a mother of two children under the age of twelve and cares for her elderly in-laws, all of whom depend on her.
“Despite the hardships she faced, she completed the race impressively,” Karmali noted, praising her determination. He added that the academy provided her with the necessary kit following her performance.
A government official commented on Mahto's chances of securing a position, explaining that 50% of the available jobs are reserved for women, with an additional 5% for widowed candidates. Given her status and capabilities, the official expressed confidence in her potential success in the recruitment process.
The heartfelt nature of Mahto's story, along with her remarkable performance, has resonated widely, resulting in the video garnering millions of views online. As the recruitment window approaches, many are hopeful for her success in landing a job that could provide stability for her family.
