Jaya Bachchan Declares Marriage Outdated for Granddaughter Navya
Jaya Bachchan, the veteran Indian actress and politician, has openly described the institution of marriage as outdated, particularly in the context of her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda. During her recent appearance at the We the Women event, the 77-year-old actress conveyed her perspective on modern relationships and the evolving role of women in society.
Expressing her thoughts on the subject, Jaya Bachchan stated, "I don't want Navya to get married." This remark comes as her granddaughter approaches her 28th birthday, prompting discussions about her future. Jaya elaborated on her views, acknowledging that societal norms around marriage have shifted significantly over the years. "I am too old to advise young girls on how to bring up children. Things have changed so much, and today little children are so smart; they will outsmart you," she added.
The actress also touched on the topic of marriage legality, suggesting that it does not necessarily define the strength of a relationship. To illustrate her point, she drew a humorous comparison to a traditional sweet, saying, "It’s like Delhi's ladoo; if you eat it, you face difficulties, but if you don't, you regret it. Just enjoy life!"
Jaya Bachchan's comments reflect a broader cultural shift, where many young people are questioning traditional views on marriage. She highlighted the importance of emotional and mental compatibility in relationships, stating that physical attraction and compatibility are also crucial. This perspective aligns with the experiences of many young people today who seek to redefine relationships on their own terms.
Navya Naveli Nanda, a graduate of Fordham University, is known for her progressive views and is currently pursuing an MBA at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. She is also a co-founder of Aara Health, a health-tech platform. As the niece of actor Abhishek Bachchan, she belongs to a prominent family in the Indian film industry, which includes notable figures such as actors Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor.
Jaya Bachchan's marriage to Amitabh Bachchan, one of India's most renowned actors, has lasted over five decades. The couple married on June 3, 1973, and they share two children, Shweta and Abhishek Bachchan. Jaya has expressed the challenges of navigating personal life in the public eye, having worked with her husband in numerous films, including classics such as 'Zanjeer' and 'Sholay'.
In her recent film appearance, Jaya was seen in 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani', directed by Karan Johar, showcasing her enduring presence in the industry. As she continues to share her insights on contemporary issues, Jaya Bachchan remains a significant voice in discussions regarding the evolving dynamics of family and relationships in today's society.
