Japan Experiences 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake, Tsunami Alert Issued
Following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake off northern Japan, a tsunami warning was briefly issued but has since been lifted.

Japan has experienced a powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, prompting a tsunami alert for its northern coastline. The earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate prefecture on Monday at 4:53pm local time (07:53 GMT), as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). This seismic event was felt widely, extending to Tokyo, which is situated hundreds of kilometres to the south.

In response to the quake, authorities initially warned of potential tsunami waves reaching heights of up to three metres (approximately 10 feet). Within two hours following the tremor, tsunami waves of around 80 centimetres (approximately 2 feet, 7 inches) had been recorded. Subsequently, the tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory. The JMA urged immediate evacuation from coastal and riverside areas to higher ground or designated evacuation buildings, emphasising that tsunami waves could arrive in succession.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced the establishment of a crisis management team to address the incident. Speaking to reporters, she stated, “For those of you who live in areas for which the warnings have been issued, please evacuate to higher, safer places such as higher ground.” Her comments underscore the government’s proactive response to ensure public safety.

As of now, officials are undertaking an assessment to determine if the earthquake has resulted in any casualties or significant damage. Live broadcasts from NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, have not reported any immediate signs of damage at several ports in Iwate, which suggests that the impact may be limited.

Japan is arguably one of the most seismically active nations globally, positioned on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where numerous tectonic plates converge. The country experiences approximately 1,500 earthquakes annually, accounting for nearly 18 per cent of the world’s seismic activity.

The memory of the catastrophic 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 2011, which resulted in around 18,500 fatalities and precipitated the Fukushima nuclear disaster, remains a poignant reminder of the country’s vulnerability. Recent concerns have also been raised regarding potential strong earthquakes along the Nankai Trough, an extensive undersea trench located south of Japan. This area marks the boundary where the Philippine Sea plate is descending beneath the continental plate.

In response to heightened seismic activity, the JMA has issued rare advisories for a possible “megaquake” in the past few years, including alerts in 2024 and December when strong offshore tremors prompted fears of a severe future event. At present, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while implementing safety measures to protect coastal communities.
