Italy Freezes Defence Agreement with Israel Amid Rising Tensions
Italy halts military cooperation with Israel, citing recent escalations and criticism of Israeli actions in Lebanon, according to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has announced the suspension of a defence agreement with Israel that has facilitated military equipment exchanges and technology research since its inception in 2006. This decision comes amid rising tensions between the two nations, particularly in light of Israel's recent military actions in Lebanon.

On Tuesday, Giorgia Meloni stated, "In view of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel." This agreement, which is typically renewed every five years, encompasses collaboration in defence industries, military personnel education and training, research and development, as well as information technology.

Historically, Meloni’s right-wing government has been seen as one of Israel's staunchest supporters in Europe. However, over the past few weeks, criticism has surfaced from the Italian leadership regarding Israeli military operations in Lebanon.

Tensions escalated following an incident where Italian peacekeepers reported warning shots fired by Israeli forces at their convoy in Lebanon. This prompted Italy to summon Israel’s ambassador in protest, resulting in damage to at least one vehicle without any reported injuries.

In a tit-for-tat diplomatic move, Israel summoned Italy's ambassador in response to statements made by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who condemned what he termed “unacceptable attacks” on Lebanese civilians by Israeli forces. Tajani, who also serves as deputy prime minister, was present in Beirut on Monday, engaging in discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi. Following the talks, Tajani expressed Italy's solidarity with Lebanon via a post on X, stating his visit aimed to address the concerns arising from Israel's actions against civilians.

The Israeli government has yet to provide a formal response to Italy's recent decision to suspend the defence agreement. As the situation continues to develop, the international community is closely monitoring the deteriorating relationship between Italy and Israel, especially in the context of regional stability in the Middle East.
