IRGC Conducts Strikes Amid Escalating Tensions in Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has intensified its military actions, reportedly launching missile strikes aimed at United States warships in the Strait of Hormuz. This latest development comes as tensions between Iran and the US escalate, particularly in maritime operations in one of the world's most crucial shipping lanes.

In response to the IRGC's actions, the US military confirmed it had struck three oil tankers linked to Iran as part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard navigation and counter what it describes as hostile activities in the region. The situation has raised alarm, with the potential for further confrontations.

Israeli media outlet Channel 13 has reported on an incident involving an antigovernment activist who is expected to face charges of incitement to terror related to social media activity aimed at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The academic, Yolanda Yavor, was arrested last November after calling for rebellion against the prime minister in her Facebook posts. Her legal representative has labelled the decision to pursue charges as politically motivated.

In southern Lebanon, the Israeli military has ordered forced evacuations for residents of the Arab Salim municipality, following the identification of a building it claimed was used by Hezbollah. The military stated that the evacuation was necessary in anticipation of a strike in retaliation for unexplained drone activity against Israeli forces. This action highlights the ongoing volatility in the region, particularly between Israel and Hezbollah.

Additionally, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi engaged in discussions with his Turkish and Saudi counterparts regarding regional developments and attempts to promote stability. The conversations focused on the US's increasing military presence and the resultant security challenges in the Strait of Hormuz.

Crude oil exports from the Middle East experienced a significant downturn, having fallen by 39 per cent compared to early 2023, according to data from oil-tracking service TankerTrackers. The loss of vessels navigating through the Strait of Hormuz has been cited as a major factor affecting the flow of oil, contributing to one of the most severe disruptions in maritime shipping in recent decades.

On the ground, Israeli military actions in Gaza have resulted in casualties among Palestinian civilians, including several children. Medical sources indicate that strikes on various locations have led to at least seven injuries in recent days. According to data reported by the Turkish Anadolu agency, the total number of Palestinian casualties since the ceasefire on October 11 now stands at over 1,300 dead and nearly 4,500 wounded.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Defence Forces have begun a new military exercise aimed at assessing readiness for complex military scenarios. Dubbed 'Dawn Cost 2.0', the unannounced exercise involves active manoeuvring of armed forces and is designed to test operational responses across multiple fronts.
