Iran's Supreme Leader Warns of Regional Conflict Amid US Tensions
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cautions the US against military action, stating an attack would lead to regional war.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued a stark warning to the United States, indicating that any military aggression would trigger a wider conflict in the region. According to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, Khamenei stated, "The Americans should know that if they start a war, this time it will be a regional war." This statement comes amidst heightened tensions as the US reinforces its military presence in the Middle East, including deploying the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to the waters near Iran.

Khamenei's remarks reflect deep-seated fears concerning US intentions, suggesting that the US aims to exploit Iran’s extensive oil and natural gas resources. President Donald Trump has previously hinted at possible military action against Tehran due to ongoing disputes over Iran's nuclear programme and alleged human rights violations during recent protests.

The Iranians have been in discussion regarding potential negotiations, with Iran's Chief Security Official Ali Larijani mentioning a framework for talks is making progress. However, Trump has maintained a tough stance, stating that Iran must adhere to two critical conditions: cease its nuclear efforts and stop the violent suppression of protests.

Tensions between the US and Iran escalated further when Iranian officials were expected to conduct a naval exercise in the Strait of Hormuz. However, an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) spokesman later contradicted this expectation, indicating no such drills would occur, raising doubts about the situation in the strategically vital waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime route, facilitating the transit of approximately one-fifth of globally traded oil. Iran has previously threatened to shut the strait in response to military action against it.

The US has warned Iran regarding its conduct in the vicinity of American military assets, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserting that the US military is overstepping its bounds. Khamenei dismissed US naval deployments, asserting that Iran will not be intimidated.

In a backdrop of escalating domestic unrest, two separate explosions in Iran's Bandar Abbas and Ahvaz have compounded worries, attributed by local authorities to gas leaks. Reports indicate varied casualty figures, suggesting a growing sense of insecurity within the nation.

Khamenei’s comments also referenced the unrest that has plagued Iran since late December, with estimates of casualties due to government responses to protests reportedly exceeding 6,300, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.

The protests initially sparked over economic woes have broadened into widespread discontent against the government. Furthermore, the political climate remains fraught as Iranian lawmakers have donned uniforms associated with the IRGC and public demonstrations have occurred in support of the regime.

In the background of diplomatic challenges, a notable tension has arisen with the European Union's designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organisation, prompting strong denunciations from Tehran. Khamenei has claimed that protests against the government were akin to a coup, stating, "The recent sedition was similar to a coup. Of course, the coup was suppressed."

With significant ramifications for both domestic and international stability, the warning from Iran's leadership highlights the precarious balance in the Middle East, as military preparedness and political strategies continue to unfold amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts. As Khamenei called for resilience against perceived external threats, the situation remains delicate, with potential implications for peace in the region and beyond.
