Iran Reviews US Proposal as Pakistan Intensifies Mediation Efforts
Iran assesses a US peace proposal amid escalating mediation by Pakistan, marking significant developments in the ongoing conflict.

Iran is currently evaluating the latest responses from the United States regarding a proposal aimed at concluding the nearly three-month conflict involving the US and Israel. Pakistani military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is expected to visit Tehran for discussions, as reported by Iranian media.

As tensions mount, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, confirmed that Iran has received the US viewpoints and is in the process of analysing them. This development comes six weeks after a ceasefire was put into effect, with mediation efforts intensifying significantly in recent days.

Field Marshal Munir's upcoming trip follows a visit by Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to Iran earlier this week. This visit marks Naqvi's second trip in under a week, aimed at discussing the recent US proposal. Pakistan previously facilitated direct negotiations between US and Iranian officials in April, which ultimately faltered due to Iran's claims of excessive US demands.

US President Donald Trump has emphasised that the negotiations are at a critical juncture, warning that they are on the "borderline" between reaching an agreement and renewing military actions against Iran. Trump stated, "Believe me, if we don’t get the right answers, it goes very quickly. We’re all ready to go," hinting at the precarious nature of the dialogue.

In response to ongoing negotiations, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserted the country's readiness for both negotiations and military action, declaring, "Wherever it is necessary to fight, we will fight, and wherever it is necessary to negotiate, we will negotiate."

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran also issued a warning against any renewed military engagement, stating that if aggression towards Iran recurs, it would extend beyond regional boundaries.

Iran's latest proposal to the US incorporates components from an earlier 14-point plan, demanding Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, reparations for damages incurred during the conflict, the lifting of sanctions, release of frozen assets, and the withdrawal of US troops from the region.

Scott Lucas, a professor of US and international politics at University College Dublin, indicated that Iran currently has the upper hand in negotiations, as it has shifted the focus from its nuclear programme to control over strategic waterways. He noted that this leverage has forced the US to reassess its position in the talks.

Despite uncertainty, Lucas believes there is potential for a settlement. However, he cautioned that the unpredictability of President Trump could result in a return to conflict if a resolution is not reached.

Since mid-April, Iran has been subject to a US naval blockade, initiated by President Trump to compel Iran to accept US conditions, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Reports indicate that the US military has conducted several ship boardings since the blockade began, further complicating relations.

As both sides continue to navigate this tense situation, the international community is closely monitoring the developments, particularly in light of the potential for escalating military action in the region.
