Iran Labels US Tanker Seizure as 'Piracy' Amid Ongoing Tensions
Iran criticises the US military's seizure of its tanker, setting the stage for further maritime conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated this week as Iran reacted strongly to the United States capturing one of its tankers. Following the US seizure of the Iranian-flagged container ship Touska, Tehran captured two foreign commercial vessels, asserting they violated maritime rules.

Iran condemned the US action as 'piracy', a sentiment echoed by Iranian state media reports. Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi, reporting from Tehran, noted that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps had previously stated that all maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz required its permission. This measure indicates Iran's attempt to consolidate control over a vital maritime route.

The US military captured the Touska on Monday while it was approaching the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. According to reports from the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), the vessel defied multiple warnings to change its course from a travel through the Strait of Hormuz. After approximately six hours of warnings from the US forces, the vessel was fired upon and subsequently seized.

The Pentagon has characterised the operation as necessary to enforce a naval blockade on Iran, which was implemented on April 13 in response to Iran's actions of blocking vessels attempting to pass through the strait. CENTCOM stated that the Touska had ventured into an area prohibited under the blockade.

On Tuesday, the Pentagon also revealed that US forces had detained another tanker, M/T Tifani, for allegedly transporting Iranian crude oil. The seizure took place in the Bay of Bengal without any incidents. The Pentagon had previously affirmed its commitment to intercept sanctioned vessels that challenge US maritime regulations.

Iran's military response to these actions has been assertive. Following the capture of its vessel, military officials warned of imminent retaliation against the US for what they labelled as 'armed piracy'. Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, declared that these actions violated a ceasefire established between the two nations and proposed significant threats involving attacks on commercial shipping.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz has become increasingly precarious, with the US military reinforcing its presence in the region. Coverage from CNN indicates that this is not the first instance where the US has been accused of piracy. A similar accusation was made by Venezuela when the US seized sanctioned oil tankers near its coast last year.

The legal boundary of piracy is defined under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which identifies such actions as illegal violence or detention at sea committed for personal gains. This definition raises questions about the ongoing military engagements in international waters, emphasizing the complexity of maritime law within an environment of rising geopolitical tensions.

The Iranian government has not disclosed its decision regarding further negotiations with the US. Statements from officials indicate a harsher stance following the latest encounters, suggesting that continued US military actions could escalate into broader confrontations. As legislative frameworks struggle to manage traditional maritime law alongside modern warfare methods, experts warn the potential for increased conflict in the region remains high.
