Iran's Khamenei Calls for Action Against Protesters Amid Unrest
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urges authorities to address rioters as protests over economic issues escalate in Iran, leading to fatalities.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared that authorities must take decisive action against what he termed 'rioters' amid ongoing protests that have engulfed the nation. Khamenei's remarks, made during a speech in Tehran, come following a week of demonstrations sparked by growing economic distress, which have reportedly resulted in at least 10 fatalities.

The protests, some of the largest seen in Iran since 2022, have been characterised by discontent over the country’s failing economy, particularly the depreciation of the national currency, the rial. Although the demonstrations have yet to reach the intensity of the protests following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody, they have spread to numerous cities across the country.

In his address, Khamenei sought to differentiate between peaceful protesters, who he acknowledged have legitimate grievances, and those he labelled as 'rioters.' He stated, 'We talk to protesters, the officials must talk to them. But there is no benefit to talking to rioters. Rioters must be put in their place.' This statement underscores the government’s stance on maintaining order amid growing civil unrest.

Khamenei's comments come in the wake of threats issued by United States President Donald Trump, who warned that the US would intervene if the Iranian government violently suppresses the protests. Trump's remarks have drawn sharp criticism from Iranian officials, including Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, who has urged international leaders to denounce such 'unlawful threats.'

The Supreme Leader also reiterated a familiar narrative that foreign adversaries, particularly the United States and Israel, are instigating the unrest. He claimed that 'a bunch of people incited or hired by the enemy' are influencing the protests while attributing the economic woes to external pressures. 'This is what matters most,' Khamenei insisted.

In light of the protests, Iran’s civilian government, led by reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian, has expressed a desire to engage with demonstrators. However, Pezeshkian has acknowledged the limitations of his administration in addressing the economic crisis that has triggered these protests.

The unrest has escalated, with clashes reported in over 25 cities, leading to fatalities among both protesters and security forces. Reports from the Mehr news agency indicate that a member of the Basij paramilitary force was killed during an altercation in Harsin, while another individual died in Qom due to an accident involving a grenade.

As the situation develops, Khamenei's statements reflect a broader strategy to maintain control while addressing the underlying economic issues that have sparked public discontent. The Iranian leadership continues to face the dual challenge of managing public unrest while navigating complex international relations, particularly concerning its nuclear programme and regional influence.

Despite the calls for action against rioters, the Iranian government has yet to put forth a comprehensive plan to alleviate the economic pressures facing its citizens. As protests persist, the Iranian authorities remain under scrutiny both domestically and internationally, with calls for accountability and reform becoming increasingly prominent among the public.
