Iran Invites Indian Congress Leaders to Ayatollah Khamenei's Funeral
Iran has officially invited Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, and Pawan Khera, who leads the party’s media and publicity wing, to attend the funeral ceremonies for the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Reports confirm these invitations were extended as of Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The burial ceremonies are notable as they reflect the significance of Khamenei's stature in Iranian politics.
In addition, sources indicate that likely representatives from India, including the Governor of Bihar, Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain (retd), and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, are expected to lead the Indian delegation to the funeral. The final details of this delegation are still being finalised.
Following an invitation from Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with him. However, it is understood that due to prior travel commitments in Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand from July 6 to 11, Prime Minister Modi will not be able to attend the ceremonies.
The funeral events will commence on July 3 and continue until July 9, taking place in the Iranian capital, Tehran, as well as in the holy city of Qom. The actual burial is scheduled to occur in Mashhad, a prominent pilgrimage site in northeast Iran. This choice of location for the burial underscores the high regard in which Khamenei was held following his assassination.
The Iranian authorities have extended invitations to numerous foreign dignitaries, indicating the international importance of the event and reflecting Khamenei’s influence in the region. As the situation develops, the diplomatic implications of these ceremonies on Iran-India relations are being closely observed.
