Iran Claims UAE Tankers Ignored Warnings Before Missile Attack
An Iranian missile strike on two oil tankers from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Strait of Hormuz has resulted in the death of one Indian sailor. The attack occurred amidst increased tensions in the Gulf and comes as Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the vessels disregarded warnings and switched off their navigation systems.
In a statement reported by Iranian media, the IRGC claimed the tankers attempted to navigate through a 'mined route' despite directives from Iranian forces. They accused the United States of encouraging the use of what they called an 'illegal route' in the strait. 'The US is inciting vessels to use an illegal route,' the IRGC noted, expressing concerns about possible repercussions for cooperation with what they termed the 'aggressor enemy'.
According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, the tankers involved, identified as Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were struck while sailing within Omani territorial waters. The ministry confirmed that the attack occurred in the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz and that it involved two Iranian cruise missiles.
The incident led to the death of the Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa and left eight others injured, including four severely, comprising six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian nationals. Fires on both tankers were reported and have since been extinguished.
This strike represents a significant escalation in ongoing tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Just a day prior, US President Donald Trump announced the reinstatement of a blockade on Iranian shipping and indicated that the US would secure the Strait of Hormuz while seeking financial contributions from countries using the route.
In a related development, the US military reported that it had successfully executed strikes on Iranian military targets on the same day as the tanker attack. A statement from US Central Command detailed that military operations had targeted several locations in Iran, including Bushehr and Bandar Abbas. This marked a continuation of the escalating conflict between the involved parties, compounding existing fears of broader regional instability.
As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the impact this escalation could have on global energy supplies and security in the vital shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz.
