Iran Claims Strikes on US Bases; Kuwait Intercepts Missiles and Drones
Iran asserts missile and drone attacks on US military bases, while Kuwait's forces intercept threats in a rising tension scenario.

Iran reportedly executed missile and drone strikes targeting United States military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain on Wednesday, responding to an alleged US attack on Qeshm Island. The Iranian Armed Forces stated that their focus was on the US Fifth Fleet and a military air base in the area, characterising the strikes as retaliation for previous assaults on an Iranian telecommunications facility and an oil tanker.

Kuwait's military confirmed the operation of its air defence systems which successfully intercepted hostile aerial threats early on Wednesday. Residents throughout the nation reported hearing loud explosions, linked to these interception efforts. Initially, the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Army confirmed their air defences were actively engaged in countering missile and drone assaults.

In subsequent communications, the military issued warnings for citizens and residents to avoid handling debris or any fragments that may have fallen as a result of the interceptions, citing public safety risks. Colonel Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, urged the public to report any unusual objects to emergency services via the designated hotline, 112.

The developments unfolded amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region, following a series of military confrontations involving the US and Iran. Iran’s state broadcaster, IRIB, claimed that US military bases in Kuwait had been targeted as a response to what they termed as “hostile actions” by the US in strategic areas including the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Although IRIB broadcasted claims of successful strikes on American facilities in Kuwait, independent verification of these assertions was not immediately available. Bahrain’s Interior Ministry subsequently activated a warning system, advising citizens and residents to remain calm and follow safety guidance.

In a notable claim, footage shared by Iran's IRIB on social media showed missiles traversing the sky above Bahrain, reinforcing claims of heightened military activities in the region. The Iranian Armed Forces reiterated their narrative, stating that the attacks directly targeted the US Fifth Fleet and a regional air base as a response to prior aggression.

The escalation followed a US strike on Qeshm Island, which targeted what was identified by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) as an Iranian military ground control station for directing drone operations. CENTCOM also denied assertions made by Iran regarding an attack on its bases. This incident represents a significant escalation of tensions in the Gulf region, intensifying security concerns in an already volatile area.
