Iran Calls for Ceasefire with US Amid Economic Sanctions
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for a cessation of hostilities with the United States, asserting that Iran is in a strong position for negotiations. In remarks made during a meeting with medical professionals, Pezeshkian said, "It is better that we bring the war to an end now as we are in a position of power and dignity." He noted that the global community recognises Iran's resilience, highlighting alleged attacks by the United States on Iranian infrastructure.
Pezeshkian, whose role as president is subordinate to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, defended a recent agreement with the US amid criticism from hardline factions within Iran's parliament. He stated, "They cannot find even a single clause in this agreement that indicates capitulation. All the commitments concern the other side."
Despite the diplomatic overtures, Iran's military has pledged readiness to retaliate against perceived threats. Major-General Ali Abdollahi, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, stated that Iran's military is prepared for a robust response across land, sea, air, and cyberspace, following the expiration of a memorandum of understanding with the US.
In related developments, Omani and Iranian foreign ministers held discussions aimed at resuming dialogue and addressing navigation issues in the crucial Strait of Hormuz. This key shipping route remains partially obstructed as the US enforces a naval counterblockade. Reports suggest that the US Navy has been facilitating secret convoys of oil tankers, allowing for significant exports despite the ongoing tensions.
In Washington, President Donald Trump expressed doubt regarding Iran’s eagerness to negotiate, stating, "We have total control of that entire region... They would love to make a deal, but they’re not ready to make the right deal, in my opinion." Trump's administration has shifted focus towards economic measures as part of its strategy, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declaring plans to intensify sanctions against Iran, suggesting that the aim is to destabilise the Iranian government.
The Iranian government has condemned these sanctions, labelling them as "economic terrorism". China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denounced the US actions, advocating for a political resolution rather than reliance on sanctions. As diplomatic tensions escalate, the global implications of these developments remain significant, particularly concerning oil supply and regional security.
