Iran Blacklists 45 Vessels, Including 14 Linked to India
Iran intensifies scrutiny of shipping, blacklisting vessels, including 14 with Indian ties, amidst global oil supply concerns.

Iran has heightened its scrutiny of maritime activities by blacklisting 45 vessels for alleged violations of transit regulations through the Strait of Hormuz. This move comes amid rising tensions in the region affecting global oil prices. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority announced these sanctions, stating that ships violating Iran's transit rules could face severe penalties, which may include fines or seizure.

The specific nature of the violations was not detailed in the announcement, but Iran has historically insisted that vessel owners secure clearance to transit the strait and pay for necessary security services. The newly established body to manage the strait indicated that the blacklisted vessels risk detention and cargo confiscation.

In an analysis conducted by India Today, it was revealed that at least 14 of the blacklisted ships have identifiable connections to India. This includes nine vessels associated with Indian energy ports or operations. The term "India link" refers to documented port calls, voyages headed to India, or connections through flags or management of the vessels.

The majority of the tankers on the blacklist are energy carriers, comprising 35 out of the total, consisting of various types such as crude tankers, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, and product tankers. They represent a broad spectrum of commercial shipping, indicating that Iran's warnings impact more than just fuel shipments.

Among the 14 vessels linked to India, four sail under the Maltese flag but are managed by the Shipping Corporation of India, while others are either Indian-flagged or have been previously registered in India. For example, the vessel named Disha has long-term ties with Petronet LNG, a major energy player in India.

As India remains one of the largest importers of oil from the Middle East, the implications of Iran's blacklist could have significant economic consequences. Data from the International Energy Agency shows that India imported approximately 155 million tonnes of oil from the region in 2024, which represented about 45 per cent of the nation's oil consumption.

Despite these challenges, Indian consumers have experienced comparatively modest increases in petrol prices, rising by only 1.89 per cent since the onset of the conflict on February 23. In contrast, fuel prices in other major oil-importing nations surged by rates as high as 29 per cent in Pakistan and 26 per cent in South Africa.

While Iran's actions have not immediately severed India's energy connections, the blacklisting introduces an array of commercial and security risks for vessels linked to the energy supply chain. The ongoing situation continues to evolve, and the international community watches closely as it assesses the broader implications for regional stability and the global oil market.
