Iran Asserts Peaceful Nuclear Intent Amid Ongoing US Negotiations
Iranian leaders reaffirm their commitment to peace and nuclear transparency while engaging in ongoing negotiations with the US.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Sunday that Iran is willing to provide assurances regarding its nuclear programme, emphasising that it does not aim to develop nuclear weapons. This statement comes as diplomatic discussions continue with the United States to address the ongoing tensions in the region.

During a press briefing, Pezeshkian stated, "We are ready to assure the world that we are not seeking nuclear weapons and are not seeking unrest in the region," as reported by Press TV. His comments aimed to underscore Iran's commitment to diplomacy and regional stability amidst a backdrop of potential peace negotiations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that any final agreement between the US and Iran must completely eradicate what he describes as a "nuclear threat" posed by Iran. He asserted, "President Trump and I agreed that any final agreement with Iran must eliminate the nuclear threat entirely. This means dismantling Iran's uranium enrichment facilities and removing enriched nuclear material from its territory."

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that he has instructed his diplomatic team not to rush into a deal with Iran, maintaining that "time is on our side." His remarks coincided with reports indicating that discussions with Iran have made significant progress, leading to a possible peace deal.

Amid these diplomatic efforts, Iran's military reported that it successfully downed an Israeli reconnaissance drone in the Hormozgan province. This incident occurred against the backdrop of a potential ceasefire extension in the ongoing conflict. Negotiators are reportedly close to a resolution that would add an additional 60 days to the current ceasefire and restore access to the critical Strait of Hormuz.

The Tasnim news agency has indicated that Iran is aiming for a timeline of two months for detailed nuclear negotiations, coupled with a 30-day window for issues concerning the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented during his official visit to India that there has been positive movement in negotiations, suggesting that an announcement could be forthcoming. He stated, "There’s been some progress," and reaffirmed the US stance against Iran's nuclear ambitions, insisting that a diplomatic resolution remains the preferred path forward.

However, Iran is presenting demands that include the release of a significant portion of its assets currently frozen abroad as a preliminary condition to advance negotiations. According to reports, there is a desire for a clear and transparent process for the unfreezing of additional assets.

Trump's latest communications have created a notable buzz around the negotiations, as he signalled that discussions are progressing towards a final resolution. He claimed the agreement with Iran is "largely negotiated" and is pending finalisation among the involved parties. Trump further indicated there is a 50/50 chance of either conflict resuming or reaching an agreement.

In a separate development, US Secret Service personnel reportedly shot a man near the White House after he opened fire during Trump’s negotiations with Iranian officials. The individual was later identified as 21-year-old Nazire Best, who approached a police checkpoint and began firing indiscriminately before being subdued. This incident added to the heightened tension surrounding the ongoing negotiations.

Despite the challenges, there is cautious optimism surrounding the potential for a peace agreement between the US and Iran, as well as a wider realignment of relations in the region. Both sides continue to navigate a multifaceted landscape filled with complex demands and geopolitical stakes.
