IPL Extends Retention Deadline Ahead of December Mini-Auction
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has announced an extension of the retention deadline for franchises, shifting it from November 15 to November 17. This adjustment comes in anticipation of the mini-auction to be held on December 16 in Goa, just weeks before the expected mega auction in 2028.
This two-day extension provides all ten franchises with additional time to finalize their player retention and release lists. As reported by Cricinfo, the original deadline coincided with the fifth One Day International (ODI) match between India and New Zealand, prompting the change.
Once the franchises submit their lists, the IPL plans to publish the pool of registered players. Teams will then begin identifying potential targets before the final auction list and sequence of bids are shared in the week preceding the auction.
In advance of the upcoming auction, two notable player trades have already taken place. The Delhi Capitals have re-acquired former captain Rishabh Pant from the Lucknow Super Giants, while left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav will now join the Lucknow side. In a separate deal, Delhi Capitals traded fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
The newly adjusted deadline allows franchises more opportunity to solidify their rosters ahead of the mini-auction in December. Teams will actively engage in their preparations once the retention and release lists are finalised, aiming to pinpoint key players from the pool of registered athletes.
While the schedule for the 2027 season has not yet been confirmed, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) previously indicated that the 2027 tournament could run from March 14 to May 30, based on the tentative schedules released in 2024. Board Secretary Devajit Saikia hinted that the season might commence at the end of March.
The December auction represents the final mini-auction prior to a mega auction linked to the 2028 season. This mega auction will also coincide with the IPL’s next media rights cycle, although the BCCI has not yet released details regarding the tender for this upcoming rights deal. The last bidding round for media rights in 2022 raised over ₹48,390.5 crore (approximately $6.2 billion), highlighting IPL’s standing as an immensely valuable sporting venture. The upcoming rights cycle is anticipated to mark another significant development for the league as it approaches its next phase in 2028.
