IPL 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Impresses against Jasprit Bumrah
In a remarkable display of talent, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shone during a recent Indian Premier League (IPL) match, facing off against one of cricket's top fast bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi hit Bumrah for two sixes in a brief innings, showcasing his exceptional skill and fearlessness. This encounter occurred on April 7 during a rain-shortened match against the Mumbai Indians in Guwahati.
Sooryavanshi's impressive performance began immediately as he faced Bumrah. He struck the first ball he received for a two runs over mid-on, followed by another six off the next ball. In total, the young batter scored 39 runs off just 14 deliveries, including five sixes and one four, contributing significantly to the Royals' total of 150 runs for three wickets in their 11 overs.
The impact of Sooryavanshi's batting was evident as it put Mumbai in a challenging position right from the start. Former South African bowler Dale Steyn remarked on the significance of this young talent, stating that Sooryavanshi had instilled fear in bowlers, including Bumrah, who had to reconsider his approach.
Steyn expressed his admiration for Sooryavanshi on ESPNcricinfo's TimeOut, saying, "Heās created and instilled the fear into bowlers that heās going to hit you for boundaries. That delivery from Bumrah⦠thatās in the slot, and thatās so rare of Bumrah. So even the great Bumrah is thinking in the back of his mind: 'donāt get it wrong; because if I get it wrong, this guy's going to hit me for six.'"
Alongside Sooryavanshi, fellow opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also delivered a stellar performance, with an unbeaten 77 runs off 32 balls. The duo amassed 80 runs for the first wicket in their five overs. Following this strong start, the Rajasthan Royals secured victory against the Mumbai Indians by 27 runs, with Mumbai managing to score only 123 for nine.
After the match, Mumbai's captain Hardik Pandya acknowledged the performance of the Rajasthan openers, particularly highlighting the importance of execution from his bowling unit. He stated, "We did not execute the deliveries we were supposed to. The bowlers need to take responsibility. As a bowling group, we were not up to the mark. Their openers threw us off our game and we were playing catch-up."
Sooryavanshi's performance adds to his growing reputation. He previously gained attention during the last IPL season, where he made history by scoring a century off just 35 balls, the second fastest in T20 history. His recent performance comes on the heels of his noteworthy contributions in the Under-19 World Cup, where he scored 175 runs against England in the final.
As cricket analysts and fans alike observe the progress of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, expectations grow that this fearless young cricketer may soon advance to play at a senior international level, a sentiment echoed by former players who advocate for his rapid inclusion in the national team. His current trajectory suggests a bright future ahead in the world of cricket.
