Injury Concerns for Shubman Gill as India Faces South Africa Test
Shubman Gill's neck injury raises doubts ahead of the second Test against South Africa, with India weighing replacement options for the captain.

Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill is facing uncertainty regarding his fitness for the upcoming second Test match against South Africa, scheduled to take place later this week at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Reports indicate that Gill's neck injury may not fully heal in time, raising concerns about his ability to participate in the crucial encounter.

Gill sustained a neck spasm during India's opening Test in Kolkata, where he was unable to bat in the final innings. The team faced a disappointing defeat, bowled out for just 93 runs while chasing a target of 124. Following the incident, Gill was admitted to hospital for treatment and discharged on Sunday, with medical advice recommending a period of rest. Initial assessments suggested that he might not travel to Guwahati for the decisive match.

Despite these recommendations, Gill opted to join the squad in Guwahati, demonstrating his determination to play. Sources within the Indian team have informed the Press Trust of India (PTI) that while Gill's pain has diminished, discomfort still lingers in the nape of his neck. The 25-year-old batsman is expected to undergo rigorous training sessions on Thursday and Friday to assess his fitness ahead of the Test.

In light of Gill's potential unavailability, discussions have emerged within the team regarding possible replacements. Two left-handed batsmen, Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal, are the only other specialist batting options currently in the squad. However, selecting either player would result in an unbalanced line-up, as it would mean that India would field seven left-handers against South Africa. This could provide an advantage to the opposition, particularly given the success of off-spinner Simon Harmer, who took eight wickets against left-handed batsmen in the first Test.

There is also consideration for introducing a right-handed batsman from outside the current squad, such as Sarfaraz Khan, Karun Nair, or Abhimanyu Easwaran. However, the current coaching staff and selection committee reportedly lack confidence in these players. They believe that opting for an external replacement would indicate a significant lack of trust in the abilities of the existing squad members to perform under pressure. Thus, it appears that the team management views a partially fit Gill as a preferable option over bringing in Sarfaraz, Nair, or Easwaran.

Recent performances by Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran have not bolstered their cases for selection. Easwaran has had an inconsistent run in first-class cricket, with recent scores including a duck and several low totals. Sarfaraz has also faced challenges during the ongoing Ranji Trophy, further complicating his prospects for inclusion.

Karun Nair, on the other hand, has been in better form, scoring 73, 8, 174*, 233, 4, and 15 in his recent outings since being dropped following the England tour. Despite his impressive performances, the management remains hesitant to reconsider his inclusion for the Test.

The second Test is set to commence on 22 November and marks a historic occasion, as it will be the first Test match ever held at Barsapara Stadium. The Indian team, which recently secured its first win on home soil in 15 years, is now on the brink of achieving a second Test series victory against South Africa in India. As the situation unfolds, fans and analysts alike will be keenly observing Gill's fitness and the team's final selection decisions.
