Indonesia Floods: Death Toll Surpasses 700 as 1 Million Evacuated
Floods in Indonesia have killed over 700 people, with 1 million evacuated. Aid efforts are hindered by blocked roads and infrastructure damage.

The death toll from catastrophic flooding on Indonesia's Sumatra island has risen to at least 708, according to the country's disaster management agency. The number of those missing remains high, with 504 individuals reported unaccounted for. This increase reflects a significant rise from the previous day's figures, which reported 604 fatalities.

Heavy monsoon rains, exacerbated by tropical cyclones, have wreaked havoc across Southeast Asia, leading to widespread destruction in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Across the affected region, more than 1,300 lives have been lost, with approximately 3.2 million individuals affected in Indonesia alone. In addition, around 2,600 people have sustained injuries due to the severe weather conditions.

In response to the emergency, authorities have evacuated one million people from high-risk areas, as aid workers scramble to reach those still trapped. However, their efforts are being severely hampered by blocked roads and damaged infrastructure. UNICEF has reported that many regions, including Tapanuli Tengah in North Sumatra and Agam in Aceh, remain inaccessible.

Aceh has emerged as one of the hardest-hit regions, with reports of essential supplies running low. Islamic Relief, a humanitarian organisation, has stated that food shortages could result if supply lines are not restored soon. In light of this, the Indonesian government announced plans to dispatch 34,000 tonnes of rice and 6.8 million litres of cooking oil to the affected provinces, including Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

The World Health Organization is also mobilising rapid response teams and critical supplies to the area, focusing on enhancing disease surveillance as conditions worsen.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, remarked, "This is another reminder of how climate change is driving more frequent and more extreme weather events, with disastrous effects."

Survivors have recounted harrowing tales of survival amidst the floods. A 17-year-old student, Gahitsa Zahira Cahyani, described the chaos as floodwaters surged unexpectedly. "We didn’t think we would survive that night because the situation was so chaotic. Everyone was thinking about saving themselves. There was no prior warning whatsoever before the water came," she stated.

The monsoon season typically brings heavy rainfall, but this year's deluge was intensified by a rare tropical storm in the Malacca Strait, causing extensive damage across Sumatra and southern Thailand, where at least 181 people have lost their lives.

The situation in Sri Lanka is similarly dire, with Cyclone Ditwah leading to severe flooding and landslides, claiming at least 410 lives, with hundreds more unaccounted for. In response, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has declared a state of emergency, labelling the disaster as the most significant in the nation's history.

As rain subsides in various regions, officials continue to issue alerts for potential landslides in the most affected areas, as communities begin the arduous task of recovery and rebuilding amidst devastating losses.
