IndiGo Faces Government Scrutiny Amid Flight Disruptions
IndiGo Airlines has recently been under intense scrutiny due to a significant wave of flight cancellations and delays, prompting the Indian government to consider regulatory action. Reports indicate that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to the airline, requiring a response within 24 hours. Government Inquiry Launched
The Indian government has initiated a high-level inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the widespread cancellations, which have reportedly affected thousands of travellers. Minister Naidu stated that the investigation would seek to identify the reasons behind the disruptions and establish accountability. He emphasised the need for recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring that passengers are not subjected to such difficulties again.
In response to the crisis, the DGCA has formed a four-member committee tasked with conducting a thorough review of the situation and the factors contributing to the flight cancellations.
Refunds and Fare Caps Implemented
As the chaos unfolded at airports nationwide, resulting in over 800 cancellations in a single day, the civil aviation ministry mandated that IndiGo issue refunds by December 7 and ensure that passengers' baggage is delivered within 48 hours. Additionally, the ministry has imposed a cap on airfares, restricting them to between ā¹7,000 and ā¹18,000 for various routes.
This decision was taken in the public interest and will remain in effect until ticket prices stabilise or a further evaluation is conducted. The ministry advised airlines to maintain sufficient ticket availability across all fare categories and to avoid excessive fare increases on routes impacted by cancellations.

Passengers have expressed frustration over the lack of timely communication from the airline regarding cancellations. Many reported receiving notifications just hours before their scheduled departures. For instance, Soubik Majumder, who had a flight booked to attend a family wedding, described the anxiety and uncertainty caused by the abrupt changes. "I booked my ticket almost a month in advance to avoid hassle, but now Iām left scrambling for alternative travel options," he lamented.
The confusion at airports has been palpable, with incidents of passengers being informed of flight cancellations only after having completed check-in and security procedures. In some cases, passengers were offered the option to rebook flights for the following day, complete with hotel accommodation and meals, but those needing immediate travel found themselves stranded.
IndiGo's Response
IndiGo has announced that it will automatically process refunds for cancelled flights and has waived cancellation and rescheduling fees for bookings made between December 5 and December 15. However, many passengers have reported that the rising costs of alternative travel options are leaving them in a difficult position. The airlineās stock has also taken a hit, dropping by over 7% in recent trading sessions.
As the aviation crisis continues, passengers remain concerned not only about refunds but also about the reliability of future travel plans. The civil aviation ministry has taken measures to ensure compliance from airlines regarding refunds and has warned of regulatory actions for any delays in processing these refunds.
