IndiGo CEO Outlines Timeline for Resuming Normal Flight Operations
IndiGo's CEO Pieter Elbers announces plans to reduce flight cancellations and restore services by mid-December following widespread disruptions.

IndiGo Airlines is facing significant disruption, with thousands of flight cancellations affecting passengers across India. In a video statement released on Friday, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers addressed the situation, offering an apology and a timeline for recovery. He indicated that by Saturday, the number of flight cancellations is expected to fall below 1,000, with a return to normal operations anticipated between December 10 and 15.

Elbers acknowledged that Friday, December 5, marked the peak of the disruptions, with over 1,000 flights cancelled. He expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to travellers, stating, "I, on behalf of all of us at IndiGo, would like to extend our sincerest apologies for the major inconvenience this has caused to many of our customers on account of delays or cancellations."

In an effort to manage the crisis and support affected customers, Elbers outlined three key initiatives being implemented by the airline. The first priority is enhanced customer communication, which includes sending messages via social media and providing detailed information regarding refunds and cancellations. The airline has also increased its call centre capacity to assist passengers.

Secondly, the airline focused on helping stranded customers, particularly at major airports. Elbers urged passengers with cancelled flights not to head to the airports, as notifications regarding their travel status were being communicated directly.

The third action taken involved strategic cancellations aimed at realigning crew and aircraft so that operations could restart smoothly the following morning. Elbers concluded his message by acknowledging the hard work of IndiGo staff during this challenging period. He stated, "My colleagues, all the great IndiGo teams and frontline staff have been working relentlessly to address this situation. Rest assured, we are doing everything in our control to not only restore your trust and belief, but strengthen it further over time."

The disruptions follow a series of operational challenges faced by the airline, which has been a leading carrier in India for nearly two decades. As the situation evolves, IndiGo is making concerted efforts to return to normalcy and regain customer confidence amidst the operational turmoil.
