Indian Women's Hockey Team Secures Asian Games Gold After 44 Years
The Indian women's hockey team wins the Asian Games gold, defeating China 1-0, marking their first title since 1982.

In a historic victory, the Indian women's hockey team triumphed over China 1-0 to clinch the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Kakamigahara, Japan. This win signifies India's first gold in women's hockey at the Asian Games in 44 years, with the previous achievement recorded in 1982. The decisive moment came in the 10th minute, when Lalremsiami marked her 200th international appearance with a brilliant strike from a difficult angle.

Lalremsiami's goal was a product of an impressive combination play involving Salima Tete and Sakshi Rana. After initiating the attack, Tete passed to Rana, who set up Lalremsiami for the crucial shot that ultimately secured India’s lead. Despite facing continuous pressure from China, India's defence remained resolute throughout the match, effectively thwarting multiple attempts by the reigning champions.

China controlled possession for much of the game, holding 55 percent of the ball and recording eight entries into the circle compared to India's four. However, India's compact defence, led by goalkeeper Savita, proved pivotal. Savita made a significant contribution by saving a penalty stroke awarded to China in the second quarter, a pivotal moment that preserved India’s slim lead.

The second quarter saw China intensify their efforts with additional penalty corners, but India's defensive units, particularly Savita and her teammates, were adept in their interventions. At half-time, India maintained a 1-0 advantage despite China's barrage of attacks.

In the third quarter, India survived another close call when a penalty stroke was initially awarded after a video referral found it was instead a penalty corner. The defensive line's performance continued to be commendable, preventing China from gaining an equaliser.

As the match progressed into the final quarter, China increased their offensive presence, yet India's defensive discipline allowed them to hold on to their lead. By the final whistle, the 1-0 score ensured India's celebrated return to the top of the Asian Games podium in women's hockey.

The victory not only marked a historic achievement for the team but also secured India's qualification for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The achievement was celebrated by fans and officials alike, with the Odisha government announcing a reward of 1.1 million Indian Rupees for each member of the women's hockey team for their exceptional performance.
