Indian Rupee Declines Against the US Dollar Amid Rising Crude Prices
The Indian Rupee depreciated by 10 paise, closing at 94.66 against the US Dollar on Tuesday, 3 October 2023. This decline is attributed to rising crude oil prices, which are nearing $98 per barrel, creating apprehensions in the market about inflation and the potential impact on India’s economy.
Market analysts have suggested that the increase in crude oil prices influences inflationary pressures within the country. As India imports a significant portion of its oil needs, fluctuations in global oil prices directly affect domestic fuel prices and, consequently, the overall cost of living.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been monitoring the currency's performance closely, as any substantial weakening of the Rupee could complicate monetary policy and limit the central bank’s ability to manage inflation effectively. The RBI’s policy measures in response to currency fluctuations will be critical in the upcoming months.
Traders speculate that continued volatility in the oil market could lead to further depreciation of the Rupee, especially if crude prices maintain their upward trajectory. Analysts advise stakeholders to keep a close eye on geopolitical developments that may influence crude oil supply and prices.
In related news, the Reserve Bank of India recently announced its intention to intervene in the foreign exchange market if excessive fluctuations in the Rupee's value are observed, reiterating its commitment to stabilising the currency as part of its broader economic strategy.
