Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to honour the legacy of former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. In a ceremonial act, Modi planted a sapling in the city, marking 58 years since Shastri's death. Shastri served as Prime Minister from 1964 until his passing in 1966 and is remembered for his leadership during critical moments for India.

The event took place at the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent, where Shastri died while on an official visit. Alongside Modi was the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who expressed his country’s respect for Shastri and highlighted the importance of India-Uzbekistan relations.

"Planting a tree is symbolic of growth, and it reinforces our commitment to nurture the ties between our nations," President Mirziyoyev stated during the occasion. Modi's visit included discussions focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation in various sectors such as trade and security.

The gesture of planting a tree signifies a long-lasting memory of Shastri, who played a crucial role in shaping India’s post-independence landscape. The visit aims to strengthen cultural ties while recognising shared historical moments.

Both leaders underscored the significance of their collaboration in fostering peace and stability in the region. Modi's tribute in Tashkent is a reminder of Shastri's lasting influence and the enduring friendship between India and Uzbekistan.
