Indian Government to Divest Up to 5.04% Stake in Cochin Shipyard
The Indian government has announced its intention to sell a stake of up to 5.04% in Cochin Shipyard through an offer for sale (OFS). This initiative is set to commence on 7 July 2023, with institutional investors being given the first opportunity to participate.
Retail investors will have the chance to submit their bids a day later, on 8 July 2023. A floor price for the shares will be established, ensuring a minimum benchmark price for the sale. In addition, the government has included a green-shoe option, which would enable the sale of a larger stake should the interest from investors be significantly high.
This divestment aligns with the government's ongoing disinvestment programme for the current fiscal year, aimed at reducing its stakes in various public sector enterprises. Facilitating such sales is part of a broader strategy to enhance capital inflow and promote private participation in government-owned companies.
As per reports, the Cochin Shipyard, established in 1972, plays a pivotal role in the Indian maritime industry, specialising in shipbuilding and ship repair services. The yard has been instrumental in advancing India’s naval capabilities and commercial shipbuilding capacities.
In recent years, similar stake sales have been undertaken for several public sector enterprises, which have generated crucial funds for the government amidst ongoing fiscal challenges. The revenue from this particular sale is expected to contribute to the treasury, supporting various developmental initiatives and infrastructure projects.
Details surrounding the exact floor price and other specifics of the offer are anticipated to be disclosed closer to the start date of the sale. Stakeholders are advised to stay updated through official announcements and market communications regarding this financial initiative.
