Indian Government Approves Rs 1.1 Lakh Crore Defence Procurements

The Indian government has authorised procurement proposals totalling ₹1.1 lakh crore (approximately £11 billion) aimed at enhancing military capabilities. This decision was facilitated by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), which convened to review and approve the proposals. A significant focus of this procurement initiative is to encourage sourcing from the Indian defence industry, reflecting a shift towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

A report by the Press Information Bureau indicates that approximately 98 per cent of the approved items will be procured from local manufacturers, aligning with the government's broader mission to boost the domestic defence sector. This strategy aims to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and enhance indigenous capabilities.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the importance of strengthening the domestic industry in his remarks following the DAC meeting. He stated, "This is a crucial step towards making India a global manufacturing hub in defence production."

The approved proposals encompass a range of military hardware, including advanced weaponry and surveillance systems. This procurement is expected to play a pivotal role in modernising India's armed forces, ensuring that they remain capable and well-equipped to address contemporary threats.

The initiative is in line with the government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) campaign which promotes self-sufficiency in various sectors, including defence. The emphasis on domestic production is anticipated to not only enhance military capability but also generate employment opportunities in the defence manufacturing sector.

Critics of previous defence procurement processes have often pointed to delays and bureaucratic hurdles. However, the current administration is stressing its commitment to expediting the procurement process. Officials expressed optimism that these new approvals will streamline production timelines and lead to quicker delivery of essential military assets.

As the global defence landscape evolves, India aims to position itself as a key player, not only in terms of procurement but also as a potential exporter of defence hardware.
