Indian Embassy Advises Nationals in France Amid Ongoing Protests
The Indian Embassy in Paris has issued a warning to Indian nationals residing in France and those planning to travel to the country, amid ongoing protests characterised by violence and unrest. The advisory emphasises the need for vigilance, urging citizens to avoid large gatherings and crowded locations.
In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the embassy noted, "In view of the recent developments and localised curfews imposed in France, please remain vigilant and exercise due caution." This comes in the wake of sporadic clashes and demonstrations that have erupted over issues including the rising cost of living and inadequate public service provisions.
Indians in France have been specifically advised to steer clear of areas where protests are currently taking place, and to adhere to guidance issued by French authorities. The embassy further recommended that citizens stay informed about potential disruptions to transport services in various French cities.
In case of emergencies, Indian nationals have been provided with contact information for the embassy, which can be reached at +33 6 48 34 00 63 or via email at cons.paris@mea.gov.in.
The advisory follows a similar warning from the Indian Embassy in Italy, which had earlier cautioned nationals against engaging in crowded spaces amid protests arising from economic concerns.
Protests in France have escalated recently, leading to significant unrest and civil disorder. Reports indicate that cities such as Paris, Marseille, and Lyon have experienced looting, arson, and confrontations with law enforcement. High school students, in particular, have expressed frustrations about insufficient funding for educational institutions and overcrowding in classrooms, along with concerns regarding the complexity of university admissions processes.
Tyler Jones, a representative of a student union, stated, "We are simply calling for change. Education is a right, and we must fight for equitable resources, particularly in low-income areas."
While the protests have resulted in a chaotic atmosphere, the past two nights have seen a calm return to parts of the country. However, curfews remain active in several major cities.
Further protests are planned for Thursday and Saturday, catalysed by student groups and organisations associated with the “yellow vest” movement, which has previously incited widespread unrest in the nation. In response to public safety concerns, Paris police announced on Wednesday that they would prohibit a protest scheduled for Thursday.
French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin disclosed that, since the onset of the unrest, 174 individuals have been imprisoned, with 917 others facing formal charges. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu met with union officials on Wednesday, pledging a significant increase in security measures for the upcoming protests to deter further violence.
The Indian Embassy's advisory serves as a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding its citizens amidst the turbulent situation.
