Indian Citizen Charged in US for False Voting Registration
Mukeshkumar Somabhai Chaudhari, an Indian national, has been charged in the United States for allegedly voting illegally in the upcoming 2024 general elections after falsely claiming to be a US citizen. The allegations involve one count of providing false information during voting and another count for making a false citizenship claim in order to register.
As stated by the US Department of Justice, if convicted, Chaudhari could face a maximum of five years in prison for each charge, which could amount to a total of up to a decade behind bars.
Markwayne Mullin, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, reinforced the administration's commitment to upholding electoral integrity. “Our message to aliens who vote in American elections is clear: we will find you, arrest you, and you will face the consequences,” he emphasized, highlighting that only US citizens should participate in electing the nation’s leaders.
These developments come amid increased scrutiny on voting practices in the United States. Under the previous administration led by Donald Trump, a significant focus was placed on addressing suspected electoral fraud. Trump and his allies have repeatedly called into question the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election. The Trump administration estimated that approximately 278,000 non-citizens might have been registered to vote in federal elections.
The administration also urged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would mandate voters to provide proof of citizenship alongside photo identification. Despite these proposals, significant resistance has emerged, with legal experts suggesting that stringent documentation requirements could disenfranchise numerous American voters, especially those from minority backgrounds.
According to the documents from the Department of Justice, Chaudhari completed a voter signature certificate in Minnesota on November 5, 2024. This form required him to confirm his status as a US citizen. Following these events, a federal grand jury returned an indictment against him on September 10, allowing the legal proceedings to advance.
Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, stated, “The right to vote is a sacred privilege of American citizenship, and every lawful voter deserves an election system in which that right is protected.” She further noted that accountability is essential for those who make false claims to engage in voting.
This incident has reignited debates surrounding voter eligibility and the methods used to ensure electoral integrity in the US, as authorities continue to enforce laws against false citizenship claims.
