Indian Automobile Sales Reach Record Highs in FY26
In the financial year 2025-26 (FY26), the Indian automobile industry has recorded significant sales growth, with overall wholesales reaching 28.3 million units, representing an increase of 10% compared to the previous fiscal year. This surge marks the highest sales figures for the sector in seven years, according to data published by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on 14 April 2026.
The breakdown of sales figures for FY26 reveals that manufacturers of passenger vehicles reported wholesales of 4.643 million units, reflecting a growth of 7.9%. Commercial vehicles registered sales of 1.080 million units, up by 12.6%. Sales of three-wheelers amounted to 0.836 million units, marking an increase of 12.8%, while sales of two-wheelers soared to 21.7 million units, achieving a notable 10.7% rise compared to FY25.
The growth trajectory observed in the key segments of the automotive market illustrates the resilience of the Indian automobile sector, which has faced various challenges including fluctuating fuel prices and supply chain disruptions. Despite this positive performance, industry analysts caution that uncertainties loom over the market, particularly due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which could impact consumer confidence and spending.
Shailesh Chandra, the president of SIAM, commented on the achievements of the sector in FY26, indicating that the growth is a reflection of the recovery phase the industry is entering. "We are witnessing a gradual resurgence in consumer demand across various segments, but caution is warranted given the external factors affecting the global market landscape," he remarked.
The automotive sector's performance in FY26 has been underpinned by continuous improvements in production capabilities and increasing investments in electric vehicles and sustainable technologies. As manufacturers adapt to changing consumer preferences and regulatory frameworks, the industry is expected to continue evolving in response to both domestic and international market dynamics.
In summary, the Indian automobile sector's record sales in FY26 exemplify a potent recovery in the face of numerous challenges. However, the outlook remains influenced by significant geopolitical events that could shape future market conditions and consumer sentiments.
