India Wins Asian Games T20 Gold; West Indies Deny ODI Sweep
In a significant weekend for Indian cricket, the T20 team triumphed over their long-standing rivals Pakistan, clinching the gold medal at the Asian Games, while the ODI team encountered a setback against the West Indies. On Saturday, 3 October 2026, India secured its back-to-back gold medals in T20 cricket, marking the seventh consecutive victory over Pakistan in this format.
The final, held in Japan, saw India set a formidable target of 211 runs with notable performances from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 61 off 28 balls, and Tilak Varma, who contributed an unbeaten 51 runs from 22 deliveries. The Pakistani side struggled in response, succumbing to a score of 192-6, despite a commendable effort from Hasan Nawaz, who amassed 96 runs off just 51 balls, eventually leading to a 19-run defeat for Pakistan.
This victory highlights India's dominance in T20 cricket against Pakistan, with a record of 14 wins in 18 encounters between the two teams.
Meanwhile, in New Chandigarh, the Indian ODI team fell short of completing a series sweep against the West Indies, losing the final match by five wickets. The West Indies chased down a target of 352 runs, with Shai Hope playing an instrumental role in the victory. Hope's unbeaten 162 runs off 143 balls featured 17 boundaries and three sixes, marking his 21st ODI century.
India's innings was notable for KL Rahul's 129 not out off 87 deliveries, supported by Rohit Sharma's 92 and Ruturaj Gaikwad's 57. However, the team faced early setbacks, losing Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli quickly to the bowling of Jayden Seales.
The West Indies, having already suffered defeats in the preceding matches in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati, needed this victory to avoid a series whitewash. Their captain, Shai Hope, was on the field for the entire match, showcasing his leadership and performance.
Looking ahead, the two nations will clash in five T20 matches, commencing in Lucknow on Tuesday. Fresh talent, including Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Shreyas Iyer, and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, will join the squad following India’s success at the Asian Games.
Since its inclusion in the Asian Games in 2010, cricket has seen India achieve significant success, having now secured gold medals in both the 2022 and 2026 editions. The next tournament is scheduled to take place in Qatar in November 2030, promising continued rivalry and excitement in the sport.
