India-US Trade Deal Unlikely Soon, Says US Trade Representative
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has indicated that an imminent trade agreement between India and the United States is unlikely. Speaking at the G20 Trade Ministers’ meeting, Goyal highlighted the current challenges in discussions over trade relations. He stressed the importance of finding shared objectives and maintaining open channels for dialogue.
During the meeting, the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Jamieson Greer, confirmed that the Biden administration has placed a significant focus on global trade issues during its G20 presidency. Greer remarked on several key focus areas for the United States, including the weaponisation of food supply chains and broader topics affecting trade dynamics among nations.
Goyal pointed out the need for clarity in distinguishing between legitimate food security measures adopted by countries and the weaponisation of food supplies, which can occur through coercive trade practices. He stated that “food should remain a source of security, stability, and cooperation.”
The USTR also discussed the implications of coercive trade actions concerning agricultural products, which pose risks not just for the nations imposing them but also for the international community. Greer stressed the need to continually re-evaluate the Most-Favoured-Nation (MFN) principle in international trade, suggesting that even foundational principles require scrutiny to remain effective in today’s global economic environment.
Piyush Goyal's remarks underscore the complexity of international trade negotiations, especially in the context of ongoing geopolitical tensions and economic instability. While a formal deal may not be on the immediate horizon, both nations appear committed to maintaining communication as they navigate these challenges.
