India and US Discuss Strategic Partnership at Jaishankar-Rubio Meeting
India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar outlines a five-point diplomatic approach during talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New Delhi.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar presented India's five-point framework on regional and global matters during a joint press conference with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New Delhi. Jaishankar emphasised India's commitment to dialogue and diplomacy for resolving conflicts, reinforcing its support for uninterrupted maritime trade and opposing the weaponisation of resources.

During his address, Jaishankar stated that ongoing discussions between New Delhi and Washington cover various sectors and continue to evolve. This visit marks Rubio's first trip to India as Secretary of State, although both officials have maintained regular communication since Rubio's appointment. "We have had a continuous engagement which has facilitated our overseeing the broad-based and growing cooperation between our two nations," Jaishankar noted.

The External Affairs Minister highlighted the strategic partnership between India and the United States as one founded on shared national interests across significant areas. He listed India’s stance on crucial global issues, reaffirming five main points: the advocacy for dialogue, the facilitation of safe maritime trading, the respect for international law, resistance to resource weaponisation, and the emphasis on reliable partnerships that bolster global supply chains.

Jaishankar also revealed that Rubio had met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, discussing various global and regional issues. In addition, he mentioned their own discussions concerning developments in West Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and ongoing dialogues regarding the recent conflicts in the region, particularly focusing on the Gulf and the Ukraine situation.

In terms of defence cooperation, Jaishankar referred to the renewal of a major defence partnership agreement that extends for another decade and underscored the significance of the newly signed underwater domain awareness roadmap. He stressed the importance of incorporating India's "Make in India" initiative into future defence strategies.

On economic matters, both nations are keen to finalise an interim trade agreement, which Jaishankar described as vital for progressing towards a more comprehensive trade pact. This agreement is expected to enhance the bilateral trade relationship that was initially discussed during Prime Minister Modi’s February 2025 visit to the US.

Energy security was another critical aspect of the discussions. Jaishankar articulated India’s responsibility to meet the energy demands of its population, ensuring accessibility and affordability. He welcomed recent expansions in energy trade between the two countries and assured that diversified supply sources are central to ensuring energy security for India.

Moreover, the minister touched upon the Shanti Act, which he indicated has unveiled new avenues for nuclear cooperation between India and the US. He expressed hope for potential advancements in this sector following recent delegations between the countries.

Lastly, Jaishankar addressed cooperation on emerging technologies, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence, highlighting ongoing collaboration within the Quad framework. He noted that India is part of initiatives targeting critical minerals and emphasised the importance of driving AI business partnerships between the two nations, especially following the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi.

The discussions between Jaishankar and Rubio signal a continuing commitment to reinforcing the strategic partnership between India and the US, encompassing economic, defence, and technological cooperation as both nations seek to navigate complex global challenges.
