India and Switzerland Strengthen Trade Ties with Five New Agreements
India and Switzerland have formalised five new agreements aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including trade and investment. These developments arose following discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin, who is on a three-day state visit to India.
Among the signed agreements, a migration and mobility partnership aims to facilitate easier movement between the two countries. This includes provisions for multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years, allowing visits of up to six months each. Additionally, student permits can be renewed for up to one year.
The agreement includes an exchange programme for young professionals, allowing up to 300 participants from each nation annually, with a potential increase to 500 in the future. This scheme will enable young people to acquire professional and language skills through temporary employment.
The discussions also led to cooperation pacts concerning transportation technologies and infrastructure development. President Parmelin highlighted Switzerland's role in significant projects in India, such as the ropeway in Varanasi and railway expansions in challenging terrains.
Prime Minister Modi pointed out that the move aimed to enhance Indian exports, noting sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering would particularly benefit. He expressed optimism about attracting Swiss investments across biotechnology, life sciences, and sustainability sectors.
The two leaders discussed enhancing market access for Indian exports to Switzerland, stressing the need for increased Swiss investment in India. Modi remarked on the broader economic partnership, stating the collaborative efforts could lead to substantial growth, targeting USD100 billion in investment and creating one million direct jobs over the next 15 years.
President Parmelin indicated Switzerland’s interest in finalising an investment protection agreement with India soon, emphasising the significance of intellectual property rights in facilitating smoother investment flows.
In addition to economic matters, discussions included military cooperation and joint research initiatives in areas like health and clean energy. Both leaders also recognised the importance of addressing global challenges, such as artificial intelligence governance, advocating for innovative and inclusive frameworks.
Modi and Parmelin also addressed the geopolitical landscape, calling for meaningful initiatives aiming for stability in regions such as Ukraine and West Asia. Conclusively, the India-EFTA Prosperity Summit, expected later this week, aims to translate these bilateral agreements into actionable outcomes.
The agreements signed during this visit mark a significant step in strengthening Indo-Swiss relations, showcasing both countries' commitment to fostering a sustainable and innovative economic partnership.
